Washington, D.C. - Congressman Ryan Zinke has introduced a bill to rename the Butte Veterans Affairs (VA) clinic in honor of Montana Pearl Harbor hero, U.S. Navy Radioman Charlie Dowd. Dowd, who fought against the attack at Pearl Harbor at the age of 17, displayed bravery and courage in the face of danger.

During the attack, rather than seeking cover, Dowd ran to the armory and positioned himself on the roof of a nearby building. He fired some of the first American shots of the day, wearing nothing but his tee shirt and boxer shorts. His actions contributed to the counter assault against the Japanese forces. The attack on Pearl Harbor claimed the lives of 2,403 American servicemembers, including 14 Montanans.

Dowd's dedication to serving his country did not end with Pearl Harbor. He went on to serve in the Navy for four years and 10 months, participating in battles across the Pacific Theater. His bravery and commitment were recognized with two Bronze Stars and numerous other commendations.

After the war, Dowd continued to serve his community and country in various capacities. He worked as an educator, reporter, sportsman, veterans advocate, and was an active member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. Congressman Zinke, who had the privilege of meeting Dowd, spoke highly of him, saying, "Radioman Dowd is a true example of a guy who loves his community and his country and lived every day to serve both."

Zinke believes that renaming the Butte VA clinic after Dowd will serve as a reminder of his life of service and commitment to patriotism. It will be a tribute to an American hero who embodies the values that we all should strive to uphold. Dowd's story is an inspiration to all, and his memory will be honored through this renaming.

The bill introduced by Congressman Zinke is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to his country and his community. It is a small gesture of gratitude for the sacrifices made by Dowd and the many other servicemembers who fought bravely for our freedom.

As we remember the events of Pearl Harbor and honor the heroes who fought there, let us also remember the lasting impact that individuals like Charlie Dowd have had on our nation.
